The Aqua Kids at Avery Point

The popular Aqua Kids television show will feature marine sciences and Connecticut Sea Grant experts from UConn in an episode that will air nationwide during the week of January 19.

Joining hosts Molly McKinney and James Dorman and the other Aqua Kids in Episode 18 of the show are Robert B. Whitlatch, professor of marine sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Nancy C. Balcom, Connecticut Sea Grant interim associate director and extension leader, and Peg Van Patten, Connecticut Sea Grant communications director.  

In Connecticut, the show will air on WCTX (MyTV channel 9 in Connecticut except for Fairfield county, 59 analog) on January 24, at 8:30 a.m.  A special guest appearance will be made by Jonathan, UConn’s mascot, who serves the cast the famous ice cream made at UConn’s Dairy Bar. 

The episode was filmed in late September at the Avery Point campus by Adventure Productions Inc. in cooperation with Connecticut Sea Grant.  The cast and crew plan to return next summer to film another episode.

Aqua Kids, produced by Adventure Productions, is a leading educational series that teaches kids of all ages the importance of protecting our nation’s aquatic environments.  The Emmy Award-winning series strives to show kids and their families that with a little dedication and the right attitude, they have the ability to make a difference within their own communities. 

In addition to two Emmys, the show has received seven Telly Awards (five Bronze and two 25th Anniversary Gold awards), two Videographer Awards (one award of Excellence and one of Distinction) and the first special Marine Awareness For Children Award by Marine BizTV. Aqua Kids is distributed by Showplace Syndication Inc.

Teens ages 13-16 can join the Aqua Kids Club online for free and participate in its Eco Hero program.  Members may possibly be selected to be included in future Aqua Kids episodes. 

The show is also showing nearby during the week of Jan. 19 on Providence - New Bedford, WNAC-TV,Wed., Jan. 21, 7 a.m.
