CLAS undergraduate elected as student representative on the UConn Board of Trustees

Corey Schmitt, a 19-year-old sophomore from Manchester, Conn., has been elected by University of Connecticut undergraduate students to a two-year term as their representative on the UConn Board of Trustees.

Schmitt, a political science major in CLAS, starts his term on July 1, 2009.

He will continue in his other elected post as speaker of the Senate in the Undergraduate Student Government. The speaker chairs and is the spokesperson for the USG Senate.

Schmitt has been active in politics since he was a student at Manchester High School. He worked on the Daniel Malloy gubernatorial campaign of 2006 and was active in the Obama presidential campaign.

“Politics has always been a passion of mine,” he said.

His current concerns at the University are tuition increases and budget constraints. He supports a higher tuition increase to maintain programs and staffing.

“I want UConn to be the best it can be,” he said.

After he graduates, he plans to attend law school.

Schmitt's counterpart, representing graduate students on the Board of Trustees, is Richard Colon, Jr., a PhD candidate in anthropology who is halfway through his two-year term.
