Tristan Jones, CLAS '07, an actuarial science major, and Courtney Sands, CLAS '07, a human development and family studies major, won the 2007 Donald Kinsman Award for student athletes.
The award recognizes academic and athletic achievement, leadership, service, perseverance, and character. It is the highest award of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes at UConn.
Jones, who was co-captain of the UConn swimming and diving team, also was the UConn Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He holds UConn records in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley.
A Babbidge Scholar with perfect 4.0 grade points in three semesters, he also held the Gordon Aston Actuarial Scholarship.
A native of Wanniassa, Australia, Jones chose UConn for its actuarial science program in the Mathematics Department. As an undergraduate he passed three professional exams of the Society of Actuaries. He has accepted a job at CIGNA in Philadelphia, one of two places he had interned while at UConn.
Sands, from Rocky Hill, Conn., will intern this summer at a Middletown law firm before heading to law school. Her career goal is to specialize in family law. Despite a back injury and a long bout with mononucleosis, she played soccer all four years at UConn.
