Two faculty chosen as BOT Distinguished Professors

Miki Neumann

Michael Neumann, professor and department head of mathematics, and John Salamone, professor of psychology, were named Board of Trustees Distinguished Professors for 2007.

The designation is the University’s highest honor; only 5 percent of active faculty can hold the title. To date, 21 of the 36 BOT Distinguished Professors are faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Neumann has been at the University since 1985. He received the Provost’s Research Excellence Award in 2004-05 and is known for his scholarship in theoretical and applied linear algebra and matrix analysis.

His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Air Force, and the National Security Agency.

He has also been a supporter of the development of the Q Center, which provides tutoring and help for students in math courses.

Salamone, who has been at UConn since 1988, heads the behavioral neuroscience graduate training program in psychology and chairs the interdisciplinary program in neuroscience.

John Salamone

He is an expert in psychopharmacology and behavioral neuroscience, focusing on the chemistry and pharmacology of the nervous system and how chemical systems in the brain are involved in motor control, motivation, stress, and cognition.

He has had research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the NSF. He also has received teaching awards from the Student Athletic Association and the Alumni Association.
