The Janet and Mark L. Goldenson Center for Actuarial Research is the home of academically rigorous actuarial research that serves the needs of the insurance and financial services industry. The center partners top actuarial students and faculty at UConn with actuarial professionals in industry to work on applied research projects.

The results are studies that are useful to industry and that provide experiential education for UConn actuarial students. The guidance of actuarial professionals as well as faculty at UConn gives students specialized training that makes them more productive when they enter the labor force. Exposure to current research helps industry better manage the actuarial issues and challenges that it faces.

Among the types of projects the center takes on: An older age mortality study funded by the life settlements industry; research projecting the financial impact on the insurance industry of the repeal of certain tax laws; a project to correct and test the variable annuity administrative system of a major insurer.

The center also is working with the Science and Islamic University of Malaysia and the National University of Malaysia to establish similar centers of excellence in actuarial research.
