Mathematics skills for business and finance

Two programs in the Mathematics Department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – Actuarial Science and Applied Financial Mathematics -- prepare undergraduate and graduate students for careers in the financial services industry. In partnership with insurance and financial firms in Hartford and the region, they offer students opportunities for internships, research projects, and real-life business experiences that benefit both the students and area companies. The Applied Financial Mathematics Program awards a professional master’s degree, and its graduates work for investment and commercial banks, consultants, insurance companies, and brokerage firms. The Actuarial Science Program awards both undergraduate and graduate degrees, and its students regularly pass several of the actuarial exams required for professional certification before they graduate.

As part of CLAS, both programs emphasize communications and problem solving skills that are at the core of a liberal arts and sciences education and that are in demand in the financial services industry.
