An education in the liberal arts and sciences will prepare you to solve problems, communicate clearly and think big in the working world. But how else do you make yourself stand out from the pack? These resources, offered through collaborations between CLAS and UConn’s Center for Career Development, will help you along the exciting path to your career.
The CLAS Career Advisor Program
The CLAS Career Advisor Program, targeted at CLAS sophomores and juniors, is a mentoring program that matches students with alumni in pairs to create career connections, share expertise, and aid in the transition from college to graduate school or the professional world. The program is virtual, so students and their mentors connect by phone or online.
Students are paired with alumni in their field of interest, and they connect on a regular basis as they explore career opportunities together. The program has grown from a pilot phase with 20 matches to a robust initiative with more than 200 alumni and students. Find out more or contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Professional Development Events
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences regularly holds various career development opportunities for students, including:
- CLAS career events, in which alumni from particular fields of work return to campus to talk about their experiences and give UConn students career advice. Previous popular topics have included political science, communication, nonprofits, and the sciences. See the full schedule of events.
- The annual Professional Development Conference, which gives students a day-long immersion into resume building, interview skills, personal marketing, and networking practice. More than 40 UConn alumni, who are now employers, regularly attend to network with and recruit students.
- Networking 101, a crash course in networking that gives students real-world practice to prepare for those high-pressure situations.
Attendance at these and other events can earn students credit toward a Certificate of Professional Development. See the current event schedule and learn more about all the events.
