Jeremy Teitelbaum became Dean of CLAS in August 2008. A mathematician, he came to UConn from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he was senior associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of mathematics. A native of New York City who grew up in Denver, he earned a BA in mathematics summa cum laude from Carleton College and a PhD in mathematics from Harvard University. He was on the faculty of the University of Michigan before joining UIC in 1990. He has been a Sloan Research Fellow and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow and Postdoctoral Fellow and has lectured and taught in China, Israel, and Germany. |

Douglas Hamilton, professor of physics, is associate dean for the physical sciences and undergraduate education. His research interests are laser physics and the optical properties of solid-state materials. A graduate of the University of Colorado who received a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Hamilton has taught at UConn since 1979. He was one of the first four teaching fellows of the University Institute for Teaching and Learning. |

Debra A. Kendall, Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology, is associate dean for life sciences and for research and graduate education. Dr. Kendall has taught at UConn since 1989 and has a large research program on the structure and biological function of membrane proteins. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She received her bachelor’s degree from Smith College and a PhD from Northwestern University. |

Associate Dean Cyrus Ernesto Zirakzadeh

Cyrus Ernesto Zirakzadeh, professor of political science, is associate dean for the social sciences and liaison to the regional campuses. His scholarship is in social movements and political thought in literature and film. In 2005, he was named a University Teaching Fellow. Dr. Zirakzadeh graduated from the University of Michigan in 1974 and received a master’s degree from Stanford University in 1975 and his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. He has taught at UConn for more than 20 years and directed the Honors Program for five years. |

Jeffrey Ogbonna Green Ogbar, associate professor of history, joined the dean’s office in August 2009 as associate dean for the humanities, public engagement, and global education. He came to UConn in 1997 after receiving his PhD and MA from Indiana University in Bloomington and a BA with honors from Morehouse College in Atlanta. His research interests include the 20th century United States with a focus on African American history, black nationalism and radical social protest. From 2003-2009 he was director of the Institute for African American Studies at UConn. |

Assistant Dean Deborah Shelby

Deborah Shelby and her staff are responsible for the business operations of the College, including financial administration, personnel, and space-construction management. Before joining CLAS she held similar responsibilities for the College of Engineering at Boston University. She managed the construction of two major buildings and many renovations and developed a financial system. Also at BU, she served in financial administration and special projects for the Provost’s Office. |

Katrina Higgins oversees the CLAS Academic Services Center, which serves undergraduates, staff, and faculty in the College. She has held a variety of student support positions in Australia and at UConn. Dr. Higgins earned her bachelor’s degree from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia in 1993 and her master’s degree from the Australia National University in the Australian Capital Territory in 1995. She received her doctorate from the University of Tasmania in 2006, where she completed a dissertation on treaty making and the Tasmanian Aborigines. |
